Belgravia Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy
Belgravia Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery, and related cleaning services. This policy explains our approach to managing health and safety risks, outlines responsibilities, and describes the procedures we follow to ensure our services are carried out safely and professionally.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, protect property, and minimise any risks arising from our cleaning operations. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, implementing effective control measures, and continuously improving our health and safety performance. All employees are expected to cooperate with these objectives and follow safe working practices at all times.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Belgravia Carpet Cleaners has overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented and maintained. Management will allocate appropriate resources, provide suitable equipment, and ensure that all staff receive adequate instruction and supervision. Managers are responsible for conducting and reviewing risk assessments for cleaning activities, including work carried out in domestic and commercial premises.
Management will periodically review this policy to ensure it remains suitable and effective in light of changes to legislation, industry standards, or the nature of our services.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of other people who may be affected by their actions at work. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, and report any hazards, near misses, or incidents to their line manager without delay.
Employees must never interfere with or misuse anything that has been provided for health, safety, or welfare reasons. They are also expected to attend relevant training sessions and apply what they have learned in their day-to-day work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing any cleaning job, an assessment of potential risks is carried out. This includes consideration of trip hazards from hoses and cables, the safe use of cleaning chemicals, access to the work area, manual handling tasks, and the presence of vulnerable persons such as children, elderly people, or pets.
Where risks are identified, appropriate control measures are implemented. These may include using warning signs, securing cables, clearing walkways, ventilating the area, or adjusting the cleaning method. Work will not proceed if conditions are deemed unsafe.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Belgravia Carpet Cleaners uses professional carpet and upholstery cleaning products that are handled in accordance with relevant safety data and control of substances guidelines. Only trained staff are permitted to dilute, handle, or apply cleaning chemicals.
Chemicals are stored securely when not in use, transported safely in company vehicles, and clearly labelled. Staff are instructed to avoid skin contact and inhalation wherever possible, and to wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, or eye protection when required.
Equipment, Machinery and Maintenance
All cleaning machinery, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, and other powered equipment, is maintained in good working order. Regular checks are carried out to ensure that equipment is safe to use and that any faults are reported immediately.
Electrical equipment is inspected at appropriate intervals and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Staff are not permitted to carry out unauthorised repairs or modifications. Damaged equipment is removed from service until it has been inspected and repaired by a competent person.
Personal Protective Equipment
Belgravia Carpet Cleaners provides personal protective equipment where necessary to reduce exposure to hazards. This may include protective gloves, masks, footwear with adequate grip, and eye protection. Employees are responsible for using PPE as instructed and for reporting any damage or defects so that items can be replaced promptly.
Manual Handling and Safe Lifting
Our employees frequently handle equipment, hoses, and containers of cleaning solution. To minimise the risk of injury, staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and are encouraged to use handling aids where possible. Heavy or awkward loads should be shared between team members, and items should not be carried up or down stairs if it cannot be done safely.
Working in Client Premises
Respect for client property and safety is central to our service. When working in homes and commercial buildings, our staff take care to protect flooring, furnishings, and fixtures by using appropriate covers and by positioning equipment carefully.
Walkways and exits are kept as clear as reasonably practicable. Warning signs are used when floors are damp, and hoses and cables are routed to reduce trip risks. Where necessary, clients and building users may be asked to avoid certain areas while cleaning is underway.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid
Employees are briefed on what to do in the event of an emergency such as fire, chemical spill, or injury. They must familiarise themselves with the emergency arrangements at client sites, including evacuation routes and assembly points where applicable.
Minor incidents are dealt with promptly and reported to management. In more serious cases, appropriate emergency services must be contacted. All accidents and near misses are recorded so that trends can be identified and corrective actions taken.
Training, Information and Supervision
Belgravia Carpet Cleaners ensures that staff receive appropriate training for their roles. This includes induction training on health and safety, safe use of equipment, chemical handling, manual handling, and working safely in client premises. Refresher training is provided when needed or when new equipment, products, or procedures are introduced.
Supervision is provided according to the experience and competence of the employee. New or less experienced staff are closely supervised until they have demonstrated that they can work safely and independently.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We encourage open communication about health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise any concerns or suggestions for improvement with their manager. Feedback from clients about safety issues is also welcomed and used to refine our procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains up to date and effective. Where necessary, changes are made and communicated to all employees so that safe working standards are maintained and improved over time.
